Created as a two-colour stone lithograph, this series draws on Joy Wong’s study of Taoist talismans and the imagery of both micro- and macroscopic elements such as fungi, earth, and water. In Taoist practice, talismans are unique to each shaman, with calligraphic swirls of Chinese radicals exaggerated to contain words of protection. Wong isolates these flourishes, cutting and chine colléing them in varied arrangements to evoke their microbial resemblance and to underscore the exploratory nature of creation.
